When it comes to Halloween costumes, some of us go to pretty incredible lengths to find our perfect costume. For many of us diehard Halloween fans, we know well ahead of time what we want as a costume or have a fairly clear idea or theme, like our favorite super hero or movie character. In my case, I am not going in a super hero costume, but I always try to pair it with partner’s costume. If I can get the kids into the costume theme, that is pure serendipity. Now if you are also a dog owner, why wouldn’t you get Fido into a dog costume? To me it just seems like they shouldn’t miss out on the Halloween fun. You would never leave Fido out of the fun Christmas, so why wouldn’t you get a dog costume of the second most popular holiday celebration?
Dog costumes don’t cost a lot (they cost between $10 and $25), so you just need to find a place that has something that works with whatever theme you are trying to create. In my opinion, dog costumes fall into three general categories. Setting aside Christmas & St Patrick’s dog costumes for a moment, the three most popular categories of dog costumes are Super hero dog costumes, Cute dog costumes and ridiculously funny dog costumes. Here are some of my favorite dog costumes and where you can find them here in Canada.
When you really look at, most of the dog costumes are pretty silly, but the collection of Zelda dog costumes developed by Carol Gardner are some of my personal favs. On her website, Gardner gives you a heart warming account of how she came up with the concept and creative juice for her dog costumes. If I have to chose, my favourite is the Zelda Punk Dog Costume and the Zelda Pirate dog costume is close second runner up.
For the most outrageous dog costumes, you can read this 2012 Huffington post article and videos of dog costumes. Check out the dachshund wearing a sausage costume. I don’t know if the owners were dressed in as Ketchup and Mustard, but I am sure they were wearing something equally silly. Speaking of dachshunds, here are a couple of best friend Rusty, a daschund who loves costumes. Here he is modelling the Waldo costume as well a yellow wig new for 2013 at Oya Costumes. How cute is that?
